A hybrid approach for simulating turbulent collisions of hydrodynamically-interacting particles
نویسندگان
چکیده
A hybrid direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach is proposed for simulating turbulent collisions of hydrodynamically-interacting particles, under the assumptions that the disturbance flows due to particles are very localized in space and there is a sufficient length-scale separation between the particle size and the Kolmogorov scale of the undisturbed turbulent flow. The approach consists of direct simulation of the undisturbed turbulent flow and an analytical representation of local small-scale disturbance flows induced by the particles. This hybrid DNS approach provides, for the first time, a quantitative research tool to study the combined effects of turbulence and hydrodynamic interactions on the motion and collisional interactions of small particles. Several numerical implementation issues are discussed, along with consistency and accuracy of the approach. Areas for further development of the approach are indicated. 2006 Elsevier Inc. High-Resolution Simulation of Turbulent Collision of Cloud Droplets
A novel parallel implementation of hybrid DNS (Direct Numerical Simulation) code for simulating collision-coalescence of aerodynamically interacting particles in a turbulent flow has been developed. An important application of this code is to quantify turbulent collisioncoalescence rate of cloud droplets, relevant to warm rain formation, under physically realistic conditions. The code enables p...
متن کاملSimulation of particle diffusion and heat transfer in a two-phase turbulent boundary layer using the Eulerian-Eulerian approach
This work investigates the response of two-dimensional, turbulent boundary layer characteristics over a flat plate to the presence of suspended particulate matter. Both phases are assumed to be interacting continua. That is, the carrier fluid equations are considered to be coupled with the particle-phase equations. A finite-difference technique with non-uniform grid has been employed for the so...
متن کاملOverview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows
An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Effect of Nanoparticles Mean Diameter on Turbulent Mixed Convection of a Nanofluid in a Horizontal Curved tube Using a Two Phase Approach
Turbulent mixed convection of a nanofluid (water/Al2O3, Φ=.02) has been studied numerically. Two-phase mixture model has been used to investigate the effects of nanoparticles mean diameter on the flow parameters. Nanoparticles distribution at the tube cross section shows that the particles are uniformly dispersed. The non-uniformity of the particles distribution occurs in the case of large nano...
متن کاملTurbulent collision efficiency of heavy particles relevant to cloud droplets
The collision efficiency of sedimenting cloud droplets in a turbulent air flow is a key input parameter in predicting the growth of cloud droplets by collision–coalescence. In this study, turbulent collision efficiency was directly computed, using a hybrid direct numerical simulation (HDNS) approach (Ayala et al 2007 J. Comput. Phys. 225 51–73). The HDNS results show that air turbulence enhance...
